DAVID WIATROLIK: Dave & The Gin Mill Gypsies
Dazzle, 2014
ACOUSTIC SWING – Swinging original tunes with a good-time sound and modern everyman lyrics, led by guitarist Wiatrolik and his unpretentious vocal style. Reminds me of Squirrel Nut Zippers or some of the other oldtimey-hipster revival bands of the ’90s. There’s also a country influence on some tracks. All tracks FCC clean.
Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 6, 7
1. 4:59 – dramatic intro, upbeat quintet bounce, humorous lyrics about aging
2. 5:59 – breezy vocals, a chunky beat, catchy chorus, pleasing round of solos
3. 5:45 – low, slinky drive with a circular bassline: a nice mysterious vibe
4. 4:43 – folksy backwoods drag, a murder ballad thick with atmosphere
5. 3:52 – a bit of alt-country/bluegrass in this one, about the state of the world
6. 3:52 – cute dixieland: a familiar lament of married life, relaxed and ironic
7. 3:53 – interesting mix of uptempo western reel & breezy swing, good violin
8. 5:10 – sort of a bossa-swing, floats along… but something’s missing
9. 4:28 – a workmanlike, boppin’ number to close it out
