NELS CLINE SINGERS: Macroscope
Cryptogramophone, 2014
POSTMODERN JAZZ – Guitar god Cline (of Wilco and a zillion avant-jazz projects) leads an instrumental group (nope, no singers*) with Bay Area drummer Scott Amendola, bassist Trevor Dunn, and special guests including percussion wizard Cyro Baptista. This is wide-ranging stuff: psychedelic jams, driving electronic thumps, general weirdness, in mostly short tracks that evolve unexpectedly and end quickly.
* actually, Nels sings a little bit. :)
Try any track. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 9
1. 5:37 – mellow, moody melody evolves into energetic psychedelic maelstrom
2. 4:26 – churning dark groove, holds steady under tight guitar twists & turns
3. 4:19 – slow guitar & wordless vox vs. fast tropical drums, then a hot jam
4. 4:11 – relaxed, soulful melody with synth heartbeat & electric piano
5. 8:18 – uptempo: drives across a percussion/synth landscape, echoey guitar
6. 4:00 – acoustic guitar & hummed melody / abstract percussion & drone
7. 3:22 – heavy stomp with slow buzzy guitar and electric harp, trippy accents
8. 11:16 – ominous trippy funhouse world, then drone layers build up and up…
9. 7:10 – sci-fi bleeps & bloops; insistent fuzz-thump; rising guitar tension
10. 5:54 – mini bursts and abstracted melodic threads piled haphazardly
