M83’s sixth album does not disappoint. Shoegazing (but minus the guitar), electronic indie pop, ambient, epicness. Half the time you can’t make out what is being said but that just makes it even more magical. Awesome synths. No FCCs. Recommended 1, 2, 8 on Disc 1 and 1, 2, 3, 8 on Disc 2. If you play one thing, play 2 on Disc 1.
Disc 1
1*. 5:23: Creepy and awesome. Atmospheric.
2*. 4:04: chorus is indistinct high-pitched female vocals overlaid with instrumentals. Cool sax(!) solo near the end. PLAY THIS SONG!
3. 3:55: energetic, with spoken vocals
4. 1:46: purely instrumental, with some pretty piano.
5. 5:43: very soft, builds to a pretty epic finish
6. 4:04: weird psychedelic lyrics, spoken by a child over synths.
7. 1:16: industrial train sounds, pretty synth
8*. 4:32: sax again, some guitar (unusual for them), pretty epic synths
9. 2:24: sounds like a bright flash (the title of the song): builds to intense synths + percussion + indistinct vocals, then ends very suddenly at 2:19
10. 1:24: quiet, atmospheric. Fades into track 11.
11. 3:09: guitar strumming, echoing drums
Disc 2
1*. 2:32: dark, moody, epic vocals and climax. Fades out.
2*. 4:23: finger-snapping! Synths sound like magical sparkles.
3*. 3:58: feels very 80s. In this case, a good thing. A little peppier than some of their other tracks.
4. 1:54: almost exclusively instrumental, with some high-pitched indistinguishable singing at the end. Very ambient.
5. 5:08: starts with just piano, then adds a chorus, and eventually guitar. Slow.
6. 3:18: more guitar – sounds a lot more “rock” than their other stuff.
7. 1:22: sounds of bugs, birds + dreamy synths
8*. 3:49: everything M83 does best. A lot of overlapping textures. Shiny shimmery synths.
9. 3:40: spoken French, synths, heavy percussion
10. 1:45: soothing, some really cool drums
11. 4:07: Mostly atmospheric/ambient, with singing over it. Pretty epic. Stops at 1:00, then continues at around 1:27. Fades out at 3:50.
